Master's in Chinese Language and Culture
I began learning Mandarin 40 years ago and have since taught many students, each with their own goals. I have helped high school students do well in their A-level exams and assisted travellers who want to navigate China easily. I have gained a lot of valuable experience from these different experiences. I have noticed changes in Mandarin education, with technology playing an important part. I always try to stay updated by using new tools like apps and online resources in my lessons. I can mix traditional and modern methods to give students a complete experience.
Having a good understanding of grammar is very important for learning Mandarin well. In my A-level Mandarin classes, we concentrate on learning grammar accurately. We thoroughly study important rules and words. Students learn how to make long sentences correctly, which is important for talking and writing. By doing grammar exercises and using real-life examples, students learn Mandarin grammar well and can communicate clearly and effectively.
My daughter loves Benjamin’s lessons. She is a complete newbie and receives help for a summer course she is taking. My daughter's Chinese homework makes her happier than her schoolwork. We just started, but things are going well so far.

I got interested in Mandarin when I was in my early twenties during a trip to China. I personally observed the language's history, traditions, and how it is used in daily life. This experience sparked my interest in studying it further. After returning, I decided to study for a doctorate in East Asian Studies. I have been teaching Mandarin to students of all ages for 38 years. I have worked in various schools, both in-person and online. I changed how I teach to match what students need now. I have been lucky to teach many different types of people, such as professionals who want to do business in China and travellers who want to improve their trips.
Good writing skills are important for school and work. In my Mandarin classes for A-levels, we focus on improving our writing skills. Students complete different types of written assignments, such as essays, reports, and creative pieces. We focus on making writing organised, clear, and easy to understand. By practising writing regularly and receiving helpful feedback, students can become skilled at writing in Mandarin. This skill helps students do well in exams and also prepares them for future academic and career opportunities where good writing is important.
When my two girls took their first lesson with Samuel B, they loved the way he taught and how kind he was, which made them want to learn more Mandarin. My girls are taking Mandarin at school for a few years now, but they couldn't remember or use what they have learned. But in the two weeks since taking lessons with Samuel B, they have made clear progress in learning Chinese signs, speech, words, and more. In addition to that, he always gets his students excited about learning because every lesson is about something interesting and useful and is a lot of fun.
The sessions are informative, though a bit more focus on the technical aspects of the language would be beneficial.

I have seen the digital revolution and spent more than 30 years studying and teaching about ICT. From the time of punch cards to the development of quantum computing, my experience has been incredibly exciting. I have been lucky to work in both the technology industry and teaching. This has helped me become a better teacher because I can use real-world examples in my lessons.
In a field like ICT that is always changing, I believe it's important to have a strong foundation of knowledge. It can be tempting to follow new trends and technologies, but it's important to understand the basic principles so that learners can adapt to any new advancements. I teach students both theory and practical skills so they can use what they learn in real-life situations.Critical thinking and problem-solving are important skills for A-level students. I regularly use challenges and quizzes to make the lessons more engaging and to check their understanding of different ICT topics.
Generally a good and helpful teacher. It's good for finding out what your grades will be, but I wouldn't suggest it to people who want specialized tutoring. Because he knows a lot of different things, some students may find that he doesn't know enough about certain topics to meet their needs.
