Instead of using the explain-the-text-in-own-words tutoring technique, I use a project-based approach that involves having the tutee work on certain projects, i.e., presentation of certain social studies concepts, preparing documentaries, researching, etc. Getting them involved in the learning process leads to more effective learning and helps them remember the concepts for ages. Quizzes and assessments are conducted in order to highlight how much they have learned and what areas need more attention.
