After getting my CPA licence and a Master's in Accounting, I spent the first 8 years of my career with well-known accounting firms. During this time, I handled audits and worked on complex financial statements. I had the opportunity to train junior accountants, which allowed me to experience teaching for the first time. I decided to pursue a career in academia after this experience. For the past 12 years, I have worked as an accounting instructor at community colleges and universities. My role has been to simplify the complexities of financial reports and make them easier for students to understand.
Accounting is more than just numbers; it's the language of business. I believe in simplifying complex accounting principles by breaking them down into smaller, easier-to-understand concepts. I prefer a practical approach, often utilising actual company financial statements to illustrate concepts. By incorporating real-world examples, students can better understand how the concepts they are learning can be applied in practise. I aim to make accounting less intimidating by going through actual reports, from balance sheets to income statements. I prioritise practise by regularly giving students problems and scenarios to work on. This helps them fully understand each topic.
